Blog About it!
For the time being, I am going to use this Blog as a way to share classroom news. Enjoy!
The phrase Interactive Notebook gives a virtual digital impression, but much to your surprise, there's nothing digital about it! I have found new inspiration; inspiration that tells me to throw out my previously required 3-ring binder and replace it with the oldie-but-goodie Composition Book.
Thanks to blogs like math=love.com, I have redesigned my 8th grade math notebook. My students and I have agreed to create our INB's for the purpose of final exam review this year. However, next year's math 8 classes will be utilizing the Interactive Notebook throughout the school year. 8th grade math will include the Interactive Notebook, a Portfolio of completed work, OMT's (Online Math Tasks), and Assessments. I am learning so much new cool stuff! Review has never been so much fun! At this point, students are using google classroom to submit their OHW (Online Homework). If a student is unable to remember their google password, then they are encouraged to use my weebly website (this site) mathwithmagee.weebly.com to submit online homework assignments.
My Weebly website is also home to my Math 8 HOMEWORK wall and Algebra 1A HOMEWORK wall. Here Students will find Homework assignments for the current week. Next up on our Virtual Learning Challenge, Google EVERYTHING! We, as a school district, have recently made the jump to Google Mail! Along with that jump comes the access to all things Google. Why am I so excited you ask?! Let me paint a picture for you: You are sitting up at 1:48am, working very hard on a paper. You're dozing in and out of dream land when you finally tell yourself you will be of no help to anyone without at least a few hours sleep and off you go to bed without remembering to save that 20 PAGE PAPER. YIKES, right? Wrong, NOT ANYMORE; Not if you're using Google Drive. If you're working in google drive, then everything you are working on SAVES AUTOMATICALLY, the moment, the second you stop working. No Save Button Required! The students and I are very excited about this since they, and I, are very forgetful at times. We are Googling it up!
During the week of December 8th through December 12th, my Algebra 1A class will be practicing the concept of a Flipped Classroom. The students and I are very excited about this because this way families can now see what their students are learning. A Flipped Classroom is where the students receive the lesson at home and complete the HW assignment in school.
We will be utilizing the resources found at emathinstruction.com. On this site, visitors will find a link under Free eTextbooks for Common Core Algebra 1. Here, students will find the units covered in Algebra 1. Each unit is broken down into Lessons which include 2 pages of notes and 2 pages of HW. The coolest part of the notes is the QR Code located in the upper right hand corner of each lessons' notes. With a QR Reader App, students can scan these codes and get linked directly to a video that covers the WHOLE lesson! Imagine the Flipping possibilities! Today, my high school math students and I decided that we didn't want to hand homework in for a grade in the usual way. Instead, I challenged my students to utilize the assignment submission form located at the bottom of the Home page of this website. We first made a plan to share devices in order to ensure that all students had access to a device, then we took a picture of each of our completed HW assignments, uploaded our saved document picture, submitted our assignment, and finally we journaled about our new skill we practiced in class! Way to Share!
I am so proud of our students. Some people get very overwhelmed with change, but our students are meeting this change head on. Students are becoming more and more comfortable with these new programs and they learning to better advocate for themselves! Students are making plans to come in and use my devices in order to complete the Socrative Quizzes! We are really on a ROLL!
Today, my students and I practiced using new features on this website. We watched a video on writing linear equations (the video is me teaching a mini lesson; check it out under the math 8 tab on this website!). This allowed me to walk around helping students while the recorded version of myself taught the mini lesson.
This week, we started our virtual adventure in my Math 8 and Algebra 1A classes! The students were very interested in hearing all about what my math class will look like in the very near future.
